What the CCL test measures
The Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test assesses your ability to interpret short conversations between English and another community language. It is administered by NAATI (the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) and consists of two dialogues of roughly 300 words each. A pass earns 5 points on the skilled migration points test, which is often the deciding margin between an EOI invitation and a wait.
Eligible languages and format
The CCL supports over 50 community languages, from Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu through Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Arabic and Persian. The test is delivered online through a secure test centre platform. You listen to two dialogues, each broken into segments, and interpret each segment in the opposite language. There is no writing or translation of text.
How to prepare in eight weeks
Successful candidates practise with real dialogue transcripts, build a glossary of common community vocabulary (health, banking, legal, education), and record themselves interpreting under time pressure. We recommend a structured 8-week plan: two weeks of vocabulary work, four weeks of paired-dialogue practice with a partner, and two weeks of full mock tests.
