The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) allows recent international graduates to live, study and work in Australia after completing an eligible qualification. It is the natural next step from a Student visa for those who want to build local work experience or explore a skilled migration pathway.
The visa has two streams. The Graduate Work stream targets qualifications matched to the skilled occupation list. The Post-Study Work stream is available to graduates of Australian Bachelor, Master or Doctoral degrees, with stays typically between two and four years.

Who is eligible for a subclass 485 visa?
Recent graduates of an eligible Australian qualification who are under the age ceiling, have held a student visa in the last six months and meet the Australian Study Requirement. Competent English, a police check and adequate health cover are also required.
How long does the 485 take to process?
Global processing times for the Post-Study Work stream typically range from six to twelve months, and Graduate Work stream applications sit within a similar band. Complete evidence, on-shore lodgement and a clean profile shorten that window.
How much does the visa cost?
The base government charge is AUD 2,235 as of 1 July 2024. Additional applicant charges apply for a spouse and dependent children, and English test, health-check and police-check costs are separate. Professional fees are quoted in writing at engagement.
Can I include my partner and children?
Yes. A spouse or de facto partner and dependent children can be added as secondary applicants at the time of lodgement, or later as subsequent entrants. Dependants get matching study and full work rights while the primary visa is in effect.
Can I extend the 485 or apply again?
Second Post-Study Work stream applications are available to eligible regional graduates who have lived and studied in a regional area on their first 485. Otherwise, most holders transition to a skilled or employer-sponsored visa before their 485 expires.
