The Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482) allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers when a genuinely qualified local candidate cannot be found. It supports labour-market needs while giving workers a structured route into Australia and, in the medium-term stream, a defined pathway to permanent residence.
The visa involves three connected approvals: standard business sponsorship for the employer, a nomination for the specific role, and an applicant visa lodged by the worker. Each is assessed against separate criteria and evidence requirements, and each must succeed for the visa to be granted.

Who can apply for a TSS 482 visa?
A skilled worker whose occupation is on the STSOL, MLTSSL or ROL, who has been nominated by an approved standard business sponsor and who meets the two years of relevant post-qualification experience, English, health and character requirements.
How long does the 482 take to process?
Sponsor, nomination and visa stages each carry their own processing time. Complete files usually resolve within two to four months when the employer holds current accreditation and the salary meets the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold.
What are the visa fees?
The base visa charge is AUD 1,455 for the short-term stream and AUD 3,035 for the medium-term stream. Sponsor and nomination fees, the Skilling Australians Fund levy and secondary applicant charges are separate. A complete quote is provided at engagement.
Can I include my family?
Yes. A spouse and dependent children can be added at lodgement or later. Family members receive matching study rights and full work rights while the primary visa is in effect.
Does the 482 lead to permanent residence?
The medium-term stream provides a defined pathway to permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) Temporary Residence Transition stream after two years of employment with the sponsoring employer. Short-term stream holders may transition under the new Skills in Demand framework.
